Sciatica Treatment in Gibsons BC

Sciatica is one of the most common reasons for leg pain and lower back discomfort. Many people on the Sunshine Coast experience sciatica due to prolonged sitting, physical work, or sports injuries.

At Gibsons Chiropractic Health Centre, we provide assessment and treatment for sciatica to help restore movement and reduce nerve irritation.

Common SymptomsCauses-of-Sciatica

Sciatica symptoms may include:

• Pain radiating from the lower back into the leg
• Tingling or numbness in the leg or foot
• Burning or sharp pain when sitting
• Weakness in the leg

Here are seven common causes of sciatica:
  1. Herniated Disc: The most common cause, where the inner material of a spinal disc protrudes and presses on the nerve root.
  2. Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back, often due to aging, which puts pressure on the nerves.
  3. Piriformis Syndrome: A condition where the piriformis muscle in the buttocks spasms or becomes tight, compressing the sciatic nerve.
  4. Spondylolisthesis: A condition where one vertebra slips forward over another, narrowing the nerve opening.
  5. Degenerative Disc Disease: Age-related wear and tear of the spinal discs, causing them to lose cushion and put pressure on nerves.
  6. Pregnancy: The weight of the fetus and changes in posture can increase pressure on the sciatic nerve.
  7. Spinal Tumors/Infection: Less common, but abnormal growths or infections in the spinal canal can cause compression.
Other factors that contribute to, or mimic, sciatica include trauma from accidents, diabetes causing nerve damage, or significant obesity.
Important note: Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction causes low back, buttock, and radiating leg pain that mimics sciatica, often resulting from excessive or too little motion in the pelvis. Unlike true sciatica (nerve compression), SI pain rarely extends below the knee and is often triggered by transitioning from sitting to standing.

How Chiropractic Care May Help

Chiropractic care focuses on improving spinal mobility and reducing irritation around the sciatic nerve.

Treatment may include:

• Spinal and/or sacroiliac joint adjustments
• Mobility exercises
